Cloud Computing, New Look
Took my first foray into cloud computing this week. I recently signed up for Google Calendar and hopefully will soon use it as my main method of keeping organized. I've also consolidated all my email accounts to Gmail, 4 in all.
Why Cloud Computing?
I've been wanting to simplify my process of communication for quite some time. It gets a bit tiresome checking all these different email addresses. Gmail allows me to check them all in one place and gives plenty of space (7,287 MB) to save and archive my messages.
Keeping my stuff in Gmail and Google calendar also gives me an extra backup for my valuable information. Currently, I do backup my data on a continual basis, but it's nice to know that if my computer dies (and it has … at least twice!), gets stolen or if Vista is making my life hell, I can go to another location and access my information.
Finally, it's another method to un-tether myself from my computer at home. Maybe, someday, I won't even need a computer at home …
My Plan of Attack
Here is what I intend to in the next few weeks:
- Set up google calendar
- Sync everything (contacts, appointments, tasks) with Outlook
- Keep all platforms always in sync (home computer, google calendar & mail, my smartphone)
- Ultimately, stop using Outlook (even though I love it) … I'm thinking simplify, that's all
CONCERNS
I have to admit, the security thing and other issues concern me:
- Who will be able to access my information?
- Where exactly are the 'cloud' servers kept?
- What about the long-term – will the cloud always be there?
But, I think it's worth the risk to try a new way of organizing my information.
Gmail also using a different method than Outlook for organizing emails. You use 'labels' instead of folders, which felt strange at first, but is slowly getting very easy to use.
Google Tasks is also relatively new and I'm not sure it will be as good as Outlook in keeping track of goals, tasks, etc.
It could be tough to give up Outlook … not sure how long the process will take or if it will even be viable. I do like the way Outlook organizes information.
NEW LOOK
Well, I finally have a (slightly) new look for this site. It's not exactly a re-design … I think it's more of a nip/tuck to make it look a little more professional and improve the flow of information.
I'm also trying to brand myself a little more – here is what I am going for:
- A non-intimidating source for information on personal finance, investing and a bit of personal growth.
- Slight tone of humour … sometimes, when it is appropriate. Obviously, the information is the most important thing first
- Not taking myself too seriously, which is my personality.
My friend Shannon from Shannon Chiarenza Design came up with the concept for the banner. Again, we're emphasizing a light tone with an emphasis on teaching and learning.
Only time will tell if it works out!

@Nicolas I haven't started using Google Apps fully yet. Still tethered to my computer! I have it set up, though, and it looks promising.
