Financial and Physical Health: 5 Fitness Tips

fitness

I firmly believe that financial and physical health are closely related.  Why? The simple fact is, if you're in great shape and feel good about yourself, you're in a much better position to make money. People that don't feel good about themselves generally make bad decisions which frequently have a negative impact on their finances.

FAT AND NOT HAPPY

At one point, I was up to 250 pounds – now, I'm a big guy, but I took a look at some old photos of me and it wasn't pretty.  I also was playing a lot of tennis at the time, and my hips and most of my joints were always in pain.  Not surprisingly, I was broke, heavily in debt and just not happy with myself.

I realized I needed to make a change as I felt much older than my age of 34 (I am now 38). So, I made a commitment to physical fitness and nutrition and 4 years later, I have to say, I'm in much better health.  Also, my balance sheet has improved dramatically.  Coincidence?  I tend to think not.

WAYS TO IMPROVE

Here's a list of 5 things that I did, which I think may help improve your physical health:

1.) Take vitamins and supplements – I always thought I had a healthy diet, but when I actually took a look at what I ate, it wasn't the case.  Being busy with work, I would skip meals plus I wouldn't eat as many fruits and vegetables as I should have.  Also, so much of our food is processed and lacking proper nutrition.

2.) Eat Breakfast – do NOT skip this important meal!  It's so important.  Before, I used to skip breakfast then stuff my face at lunch, which is a sure-fire way to add on the pounds.  These days, it doesn't matter how rushed I am in the morning, I make sure I get some kind of food in me.

3.) Eat 6 little meals vs. 3 large meals – eating lots of little meals throughout the day, may keep your metabolism steady which will help keep the weight off.  Now, I snack constantly, which ensures that I don't binge when I get hungry.

4.) Yoga – yoga is hands down one of the best full-body workouts I've ever done.  The problem with free weights is you tend to favour certain muscles which can cause injuries, aches and pains.  After my first yoga class, I worked out muscles that I didn't even know I had!  It's not just for women anymore – I'm seeing more and more guys at the yoga studio.

5.) Respect your body – I used to think that I had to have epic workouts to get any benefit - I also used to get to the gym at least 5 days/week.  The problem was, I got really tired, dreaded working out and got injured … then you can't even work out at all!  Now, I only work out 4 days MAX, and don't feel guilty about taking a couple of days off if I'm feeling tired.   Listen to what your body is saying to you … it's all about consistency.

I still work out diligently at the gym … after all, I've got many more goals to achieve.

I look forward to the day when I am at my peak physical and financial best!

I agree with this, but I'd

I agree with this, but I'd add the "mental" (or even a more apropiate word "emotional") health. I'm pretty sure that knowing what we want on this life makes us take the right desicion about our money.

I sure see a link between

I sure see a link between health and wealth. If your financial house is in order, chances are your physical health is tooo. People who are healthy and understand their finances tend to live in a tidy uncluttered home as well. Go figure. :D

Financial & Physical Healthy

@Squawkfox - I think financial health (or lack thereof) manifests itself in many ways

@Felipe - I was purposely focusing on the 'physical' in this post, but you are also correct in saying that 'emotional' health is also a factor.

Eat several meals

I prefer item #3 that you mention - I think eating smaller meals more times a day keeps you from overeating throughout the day. Nice list of tips.

Nutrition Info

@Steph Thanks for the information!

Totally Agree!

I agree 100% with all of your tips. I have the hardest time with yoga. Absolutely the hardest workouts I've done were yoga.

I totally agree with those

I totally agree with those terms to be honest. If you are fat you cannot be happy. You are happy in the moment you have a muscled body and this is why these steps are for. Thank you for writing them.
